Artist Statement
Abstract photography presents unlimited possibilities for the exploration of new ideas and concepts. It offers me the ability to communicate basic human emotions, which in turn, evoke emotive responses from the viewer. Consequently, I can express myself through a visual language where the vocabulary has deep cultural and emotional connections that resonate with the viewer.
I strive to move the boundaries of the photographic medium beyond traditional approaches. Spending almost two years on this project, Abstracts #7, I tested many methods and processes that finally culminated in the photographs in this gallery. Color and lines were emphasized along with geometric shapes, primarily squares, rectangles and triangles. The colors I used were predominantly red, blue, green and yellow. The shapes and colors together have specific symbolic and psychological affect on the viewer. Using unorthodox camera techniques, the formal elements are transformed to create unique images that bare no reference to the natural world. The interaction of color and shapes creates an illusion of chaos, but yet at the same time, intimates intrinsic feelings of conformity, warmth and peacefulness. The photographs have a three dimensional quality, a rhythm that ebbs and flows, and a sense of energy with underlying tranquility. My efforts result in images with depth, rhythm and energy—images that are abstract, new, compelling, highly emotional and spiritual.
