Statement
The project is a series of fifteen fragments of human hair weaved with nylon threads and placed in a
series of column in reference to commemorative monuments. The project draws its inspiration from
research in population genetics. More precisely the genetic part in suicidal tendencies, that is to say,
the idea of differences between each of us in society and the transmission of genetic information. I
try to make people reflect on to suicide and its causes.
Weaving, as a system, organizes the different elements to create something new. From this
angle weaving shares the same characteristics as the genetic code how’s creating a living
organism by mixing nitrogen bases. The installation of the weaved fragments in a
commemorative form bring the idea of death but also demonstrates the importance (or not)
given to the missed ones. Here the light becomes important. Inspired by the work of Christian
Boltanski, especially the installation of ''Les registres du Grand Hornu, 1997'' The lighting is
made to be intimate and dramatic but very directional because it excluded a small but very
important portion of the work. In fact the series of weaving is an evolution of mutations that
occur during transmission of genetic information. Subtil changes are quietly taking form along
the way until that last one. through the accumulation of mutations he has become virtually
dysfunctional. He is set away and secluded in the shade while attention is placed on others.
Thus, this project is a bridge between art and science, a visual response to scientific research
on genetics and suicidal tendencies. It’s also a commentary on the significant presence of this
phenomenon in our society and the discomfort related to it.
