Ukrainian Artist & Documentary Photographer
Born 1976, Donetsk, Ukraine
Alena Grom is a Ukrainian artist and documentary photographer whose work lies at the
intersection of conceptual photography and social reportage. Born in Donetsk, she was
forced to leave her hometown in 2014 due to the military conflict in Eastern Ukraine, and
once again became a refugee following Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022. These
personal experiences of displacement and war profoundly shaped her artistic vision,
making photography both a lifeline and a means of confronting the human consequences
of conflict. Grom’s work explores the human condition in times of war — focusing on the
lives of victims, migrants, and refugees. Her projects blend documentary photography,
conceptual approaches, video, collage, and archival materials. Prioritizing emotional depth
and narrative over aesthetic form, she aims to create works that serve simultaneously as
documentation and testimony sparking public dialogue and drawing attention to social and
political realities.
Since 2016, Alena Grom has participated in over 100 international exhibitions, including
numerous solo shows. Her works have been exhibited worldwide across the USA,
Europe, the UK, UAE, Japan, Australia, India, Mexico, Cuba, Malaysia, and beyond. Her
