Benedetta Montini: Photoperformer

A Crack In the Door
The work of Benedetta Montini displayed in this VASA exhibition is first of all a performance. As with all artist their creative efforts is first a performance for the “self” and then for others to participate in. Participation in this manner may be viewed as a performance, an interaction, an exchange or a dialog with the image. It is a dialog of reflection, exposure and analysis.
The exhibition provides an overview of Benedetta Montini’s creative work that includes a college series, videos and what she refers to as “photoperformances”. The collage images are intentional and reflective. They are the result of cutting, ripping, positioning and reconstructing, within a codification that is defined through the experience of her work. In the process of tearing down she re-builds the images, constructing the boundaries of their (possible) meanings. Through our own interpretive process we build a relationship to her work. This process is a performance, first for Montini and secondly for us. Montini makes her intentions clear to us: “What I am looking for is above all an empathic relationship between my work and the people who look at it.” She wants you to see and feel with her.
Taken collectively (fixed and moving images) the work on display in the VASA exhibition provides a crack in the door to Montini’s mind as well as our own. For Montini’s images to make sense to us we need to know the language from which she works. To put it simply this is not reportage in the traditional sense but a psychological investigation; it is an emblematic challenge for both sides of the pen.
By emblematic challenge I refer to a process for constructing meaning: How to make sense of work as an expression, as a set of referents, a process of de-codification. Montini is not gentle with our minds or our feelings. Montini leads us to confront our own connections to our past and our lived anxieties. The collective work here is a performance within our own minds.
Central to performance art is body and identity politics. In her video “Egon Schiele Io Sono Strabica” Montini struggles with what she refers to the challenges of being a woman artist. She uses her body to embrace this concept through running, falling, rolling and rising again to continue the quest. She is persistent and unyielding. The video is black and white and grainy in sight and sound. In the end she confronts us by shifting to color and resolve, a direct address, a close-up head, hand covering one eye, confronting us.
The exhibition also introduces a concept she refers to as “photoperformance”. Photoperformance is a series or sequence of still images (in video or still) challenging the reader of her text to connect and make-sense. This concept is exemplified by her video “Ciaccona su basso ostinato” (appearing on the artist statement page). Through dance like motions and blurred images, full of energy, we again confront the idea of struggle, a continuous theme throughout her work.
Struggle, empathy and resilience, are key elements to unlocking this work. It is not easy, for the reader of her text (all images are texts to be read) to open their door enough to let her in as she requests, to share in her feelings, to make her feelings their own. Here the concept of “equivalence” comes into play. (Equivalence, supported by Alfred Stieglitz and later Minor White, refers to the meaning or experience of the image going beyond the object/space photographed to represent something else. The image as a metaphor.) Benedetta Montini’s work moves the reflective reader to feel, see and experience struggle and resilience.
In order to open the door the reader we must recognize that there is a door to be opened. As with all interpretive analysis, the deconstruction of the text, the reader needs to be receptive to an expanding paradigm of understandings. The challenge is as always to dismiss the surface readings, returning to the text once again to see more. This is goes beyond mere projections of meaning, seeing it as someone else’s story, but emerges from the reader’s own life stories, the place where empathy resides.

L'immagine come metafora.)
