About Federico Sutera
“Since I was 18 years old I’ve been interested in documentary photography, especially its social aspects. I think photography has a very important role within the larger world of communication and information. There are many ways of looking at the world and seeing beyond what reality normally presents us with. For me, photography is a means to this end. “
Federico Sutera is actually based in Venice ( Italy ) works as free-lance photographer at Xframe Studio. He is interestedon personal documentary projects that are especially focalized on social subjects connected to the territory and the environment. At the moment he collaborates with LaPresse and Anzenberger photo agency.
In the 2006 he earned his master degree in documentary photography. After that he collaborated for one year with Feaps Madrid working on a photographic project concerning Down syndrome. The work was exhibited at Galileo Galilei in Madrid. The project was later published in a book form titled “Carta de los derechos de las personas con discapacidad intellectual”.
During his stay in Spain Federico participated in workshops with Alex Majoli and Antoine D’ Agata (Magnum).
In the 2008 his portfolio “ Street Portraits “ was selected for portfolio review at the Photobiennale in Thessalonika (Greece).
In the 2009 he collaborated with Notimex, a Mexican press agency based in Madrid, and with the federation of progressist women, developing a project on immigrant women. The project was exhibited at the Uned (University of foreign studies) in Madrid.
In 2009 he started working on the Saharawi project exhibited here. The project emerged out of encounters with Saharawi friends while living in Madrid.
Speaking on his interest in the Saharawi Federico stated:
“ I have been suddenly fascinated by their history that was unknown to me. I realized the famous singer Manu Chao; dedicated a song to them called Proxima estacion Esperanza “ but I didn’t know nothing more about them. In Italy we don’t speak too much about this subject as we don’t have any political responsibility with this population”.
In the 2010 Aftermath Project selected Federico with Alinka Echeverria as finalists for the Saharawi grant. In 2012 he won the 2nd prize at the portfolio review Photonic moments in Ljubljana. Federico was been selected as finalist for the photography festival Encontros da Imagem in Braga. His work about the Saharawi has been recently exposed at “ La Casa Dei Tre Oci “ during the collective exhibition Emersioni.
